Mastic Beach Conservancy 4th Annual Earth Day Waterfront Clean-up
“There is no better way to celebrate Earth Day than by clearing out 100’s of illegally dumped tires from our sensitive wetlands. Toxic tires are not only polluting our protected parklands but are a prime source for breeding mosquitoes. Also after the many storms and flooding events this winter there is a need for the community to come together and help clean up the scattered debris and let the natural beauty of Mastic Beach shine through. I hope that residents will come out and join us in beautifying our area,” said Maura Spery, former Mastic Beach mayor and current President for the Conservancy.
This year’s event will take place in the area east from Pattersquash Creek below Elm Road West. Participants should meet at the corner of Hemlock Drive and Forest Road East by 10 AM. Garbage bags, pickers and gloves will be provided. Participants are advised to wear long pants and socks, as well as water resistant shoes/boots. Mastic Beach Conservancy is focusing efforts on this area to clean out a toxic tire yard and debris churned up by the winter storms and floods. This area is also near the start of the Mastic Beach Conservancy’s future nature trail.
The event is open to all. Previous clean-up events have drawn over one hundred participants and resulted in the removal of hundreds of bags of trash. If residents choose to clean up other areas in the conservation area, they can contact us we can arrange for garbage collection. Special thanks to Home Depot for donating clean-up supplies.
Mastic Beach Conservancy is a nonprofit, community-led organization with 501(c)(3) status whose mission is to conserve the 6.5 miles of publicly-accessible, recreational waterfront parkland throughout the Mastic Beach and Shirley Conservation Area. The group consists of residents of Mastic Beach, Mastic and Shirley, and includes life-long locals and newcomers alike, and strives to improve and protect the waterfront’s environmental health while making it possible for residents and others to experience the area’s incredible natural beauty. A key goal is to develop and complete a network of blue & green nature trails that will allow people to easily bike, hike and play along the scenic Mastic Beach waterfront parkland.
The organization is committed to partnering with local community groups to combat the effects of climate change and sea-level rise through a variety of initiatives focused on conservation, education and community-building.
